I have used walnut husk stain (which is unsure if it is historically accurate) I dipped and washed off the excessive stain from the leather 3-4 times. Then I oiled the futteral with neatsfoot oil and set it on the windowsill on a hot and sunny day for a couple of hours. While I sadly didn’t take before and after pictures, I believe the tanning in the sun did most of the heavy lifting. The walnut stain was bought, and the bottle didn’t have an ingredients list, but it didn’t even dye my fingers much, so I somewhat doubt its potency, looking back.
